South Africa Considers New Controls on Deep-Sea Sugar Imports

On 2 November, Deputy Trade Minister Zuko Godlimpi said the government was considering import quotas for deep-sea sugar to support domestic producers. The existing customs duty had been increased to 697.92 cents per kilogram, following the reference-price adjustment to US$785 per tonne. The proposed quotas had not yet been finalised. This creates opportunities for local sugar producers, distributors and supply-chain businesses. HPC can support trade research, sourcing analysis and market-entry planning.
